So last time I wrote about the top Five Mystery Writers that you should read if you want to excel in your craft.
In this post we will be talking about top Seven
Thriller Writers of all time that have inspired and enthralled millions of
readers and writers over the years.
We have listed the first seven out of the thousands
that came to our mind but we will keep on talking about more who have inspired
us in our journey, through our blogs. We are excited to know your picks that
helped you in your craft.
Ian Fleming: An
English author who has turned into a Phenomenon over the years with his most
iconic character - James Bond. Fleming came from a wealthy family and moved
through several jobs before he started writing. His job at Britain's Naval Intelligence
Division during the Second World War where he was involved in planning
Operation Golden-Eye and his career as a journalist provided him with the
background, detail and depth for his James Bond novels. Fleming wrote his first
Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 and eventually wrote Eleven Bond novels and
two collections of short-stories between 1953 and 1966. The Bond stories have been
sold over 100 million copies worldwide. In 2008, The Times ranked Fleming 14th
on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
Arthur Conan Doyle: If you know Sherlock Holmes then you know this
British writer. Best known for his detective fiction featuring the character
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. By profession a physician, he published A Study
in Scarlet in 1887 the first of four novels about Holmes and Dr. Watson. In
addition, Doyle wrote over fifty short stories featuring the famous detective.
But initially Doyle struggled to find a publisher for his first book and when
he did find one interested publisher in 1886 he received £25 (£2500 today) for
all rights to the story and then we all know what happened next.
John Le Carre: An
British author of espionage novels. His most famous novel The Spy Who Came in
from the Cold came from his background in Security Service and the Secret
Intelligence Service and it eventually became an international best-seller and
still remains one of his best-known works. In 2008, The Times ranked him 22nd
on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
James Patterson: an
American author. Among his work are the Alex Cross, Michael Bennett, Women's
Murder Club, Maximum Ride, Daniel X, NYPD Red, Witch and Wizard, and Private
series, as well as many stand-alone thrillers, non-fiction and romance novels.
His books have sold more than 300 million copies and he was the first person to
sell 1 million e-books. In 2016, Patterson topped Forbes's list of highest-paid
authors for the third consecutive year, with an income of $95 million. His
total income over a decade is estimated at $700 million. Patterson, now 60, was
a wealthy executive and part-time writer until 1992, when, aged 45, he
published Along Came a Spider, the first of his murder thrillers, starring the
black, Washington DC-based psychologist and ex-cop Dr Alex Cross. But over the
years he has been marred with quality issues in his novels.
As Lee Child
observes: 'Patterson's early novels were excellent, but you can fall off
drastically and still achieve sales.'
Patricia Cornwell: An
American crime writer, she is known for writing the best-selling series of
novels featuring the heroine Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a medical examiner. Her career
began in 1979, when she began working as a reporter for The Charlotte Observer.
She began work on her first novel in 1984, about a male detective named Joe
Constable and met Dr. Marcella Farinelli Fierro, a medical examiner in
Richmond, and subsequent inspiration for the character of Dr. Kay Scarpetta.
Her books have sold more than 100 million copies since then.
Clive Cussler: An
American adventure novelist and underwater explorer. We have been thrilled with
this most famous character Dirk Pitt. His books have reached The New York Times
fiction best-seller list more than 20 times. He is also the founder and
chairman of the real-life National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA), which
has discovered more than 60 shipwreck sites and numerous other notable
underwater wrecks. He began writing in 1965 when his wife took a job working
nights for the local police department where they lived in California. After
making dinner for the children and putting them to bed, he had no one to talk
to and nothing to do, so he decided to start writing. And eventually wrote 20
New York Times bestseller.
Tom Clancy: An
American novelist best known for his technically detailed espionage and
military-science story lines set during and after the Cold War. Seventeen of
his novels were bestsellers, and more than 100 million copies of his books are
in print. His literary career began in 1984 when he sold The Hunt for Red
October for $5,000 and as they say the rest is history. His most famous
character Jack Ryan have been portrayed by Actors like Alec Baldwin, Harrison
Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine in commercially successful movies. His
second-most famous character, John Clark, has been played by actors Willem
Dafoe and Liev Schreiber in various adaptations.
